How Gluten Free Aware Are Gluten Free Restaurants?

100% gluten free?

Eating out...
I was eating at one of my favourite restaurants in San Francisco recently and as I sat down to eat my gluten free meal, a meal that I’ve eaten a number of times, a new concern came to me. I really should just stop thinking altogether to avoid my mind conjuring up these new ideas and concerns but I’ll continue now that I’ve begun….
Those ‘Being Celiac Really Sucks’ Days

Always label checking..
We all know that being celiac isn’t easy but honestly, most days I’m fine. I’m not excited about the limitations being gluten free places on my eating life but in general I know what I can and what I can’t eat and if I’m not sure about something I know what to do to find out. In saying that, every now and again I find myself having a ‘being celiac really sucks’ day and it’s not very nice at all. Everything will be going fine and then suddenly something happens which makes me realise all over again how limited I am when it comes to what I can eat. I’m pretty sure you get this too. (more…)
How Gluten Free Is Your Kitchen?

No gluten in my kitchen!
Is your kitchen 100% gluten free? Has your family or partner decided to go gluten free with you or do you have your own special safe section within a gluten loving family kitchen? If you live in shared housing do you keep your pots and pans to yourself?
With the threat of cross contamination a serious one, how careful are you when it comes to keeping evil crumbs from sneaking into your food? (more…)
How Gluten Free Trusting Are You?

John making empanadas
I trust John 100% when it comes to him cooking us a gluten free meal. He has been with me on my gluten free journey from day one and he is as thorough as me when it comes to checking and cleaning. My heart tingles with love when I hear him asking someone if he can give their chopping board an extra clean
With anyone new to gluten free cooking I’m a little wary but I’m starting to put my trust (and my healthy villi) in the hands of my cautious parents and closer friends. My level of gluten free trust depends on who is cooking for me, what they are cooking and where they are cooking it.
Today I came across this article from an online US newspaper and it worries me a little.
How Free of Gluten is Your Gluten Free Life?
A few days ago I was speaking to my friend who happens to have another friend with coeliac disease. Whilst we were cooking dinner together she noticed how careful I was being and how much attention I was paying to everything. I scrubbed every pot, pan, knife and spoon before we used them and checked the labels of each and every ingredient we were cooking with. All of this is normal practice for me. (more…)
Can you always tell if you eat gluten?

Is everything you're eating as clear as this?
I often hear from people about how terrible they feel after they accidentally eat gluten and it’s got me wondering why personally I rarely feel this way… (more…)

The cost of being diagnosed as coeliac?

GF travelling in San Telmo, Buenos Aires
Recently I’ve been speaking to gluten free travellers from around the world. Some of these people have known they are coeliac for many years, others have been fairly recently diagnosed like myself and a number know that gluten affects them negatively but have not yet discovered the full reason for this. (more…)
Coeliac Disease and Non-Coeliac Gluten Sensitivity
There is huge debate and research going on right now on coeliac disease (CD) versus non-coeliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS). For a long time it appears that NCGS wasn’t a diagnosis that was made but with more and more people with text book symptoms testing negative to CD it’s becoming more and more written and talked about. (more…)
Celiac Disease and Oats
Oats are one of the most confusing topics where celiacs are concerned. Can we or can’t we eat them? Why all of the misunderstanding? Oats are naturally gluten free, right?
