Is That Gluten Free? (UK)

On a regular basis I come across products that I would like to eat or drink but I have no idea whether or not they are gluten free. I can’t tell from their labelling and they aren’t mentioned in the Coeliac UK product list so often I end up missing out on something ‘just in case’ it’s unsafe. This section will provide details of those companies I have contacted in search of the gluten status of some products and the (hopefully positive) results of this research!

Are His Kisses Gluten Free?

Apr

The following is strong evidence of just how much time I spend focused on my

A gluten free kiss!

gluten free world…

When Cher sang the Shoop Shoop song she may have been talking about love when she said ‘It’s in his kiss’ but hearing these words leads my wee gluten free noggin (that’s my head) to think about whether kissing could be a source of cross contamination?

Haribo Christmas Collection Gluten Free?

Jan
17

I received a big 800g box of Haribo Christmas Collection from my dad at Christmas time. I love Haribo and I’m very happy that most of their sweets are gluten free but whilst I feel safe eating the bags which say gluten free on the back I will always double check if they don’t.  I know that almost all of the gummy Haribo shapes are gluten free unless they are part of a variety which includes licorice sweets but I figure that if it doesn’t say on the label that it’s gluten free then it’s not gluten free to me and there are plenty others which I can safely eat.

This Christmas Collection did not say whether or not it was gluten free so I thought I’d send Haribo an email to check.

This is the response I received:

Thank you for your email regarding Haribo Christmas Collection.

If the code on the product commences L441 this confirms that the product was made in the UK and we can confirm then that this product is gluten free.

Pleasae accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Haribo Customer Care (UK)

So…I looked at the box and the code did not commence with L441. This box of Haribo was made and packaged in Germany so I can’t be sure it’s gluten free :-(

I gave the box of sweets to my boyfriend to eat and the next time I saw my dad he had bought me an even bigger box…1250g! This time though it was Haribo Starmix, with a code on the label which began with L441! I know that 200g bags of Starmix are gluten free so it felt safe to assume that more of the same would be too! :-)

Terry’s Chocolate Orange Gluten Free?

Dec
29

I was given a Terry’s chocolate Orange at work today…something I completely forget about until the festive season comes around and they seem to be everywhere! Are these delicious Christmassy chocolate delights gluten free? On the back of the box is the Terry’s Chocolate Orange Careline so I thought I’d give them a call to find out. A pleasant sounding man answered my call…

Me: Hello, I was wondering whether the Terry’s Chocolate Orange is gluten free?

Nice man: Well, all of the ingredients in the product are gluten free (oooh, this sounds positive!) However, (hrmm, not a good sign) as our chocolate orange is made in a factory alongside other products which do contain gluten we cannot guarantee that this product is completely gluten free.

Me: That’s not the answer I was hoping for :-(

Nice man: It depends how allergic to gluten you are…

Me: Well, I have Coeliac Disease so I cannot have any gluten at all!

Nice man: Well in that case I would recommend that you stick to the products which are definitely gluten free.

Me: So which of your products are completely gluten free then?

Nice man: Actually none of Kraft’s products can claim to be completely gluten free as we do not operate in gluten free factories.

Mars Celebrations Gluten Free?

Dec
21

I’m sitting in my office on a chilly day. It’s almost Christmas and there are sweets and treats galore. A huge box of Mars Celebrations is beaming at me from across the room and I’m wondering whether or not I can have any of these. I know I can’t have Malteasers but what about the others? I emailed Mars to ask them for a list of their gluten free products. Let’s see if they get back to me with good news!

Message:
Hello, I was wondering if you could send me a list telling me which of your products are gluten free? You don’t have this information on your labelling and you don’t provide details of your gf products in the coeliac UK list so how can I find out which of your products are safe for me to eat? I have recently found out that I have coeliac disease and was very dissapointed to discover that I had to stay away from all Mars products because I can’t be certain about the gluten content. Please help me out here because I’m missing out on some of my favourite treats…Thanks, Laura
