Lots of gluten free products!

100% gluten free store

Yesterday I took a day trip to Sacramento with my friend. We had a really fun day and lots of tasty gluten free goodies were discovered. This was my first visit to Sacramento and I enjoyed wandering down the many tree lined streets which were especially pretty due to all the fallen leaves and autumn colours. (more…)

Los Gatos/Morgan Hill Gluten Free

My tasty lunch at Erik's

Yesterday I went on a mini road trip with a friend which took us to Los Gatos and Morgan Hill, an hour or so south of San Francisco. She had a couple of short meetings in each town so I used this as an opportunity to discover what these small towns have to offer in terms of celiac friendly options for gluten free locals or travellers to the area.

As usual I did some online research into the towns we would be visiting to get leads on celiac friendly eateries. The plan was to find somewhere safe and delicious to eat lunch and as it turned out I found six different possibilities! I was very impressed. (more…)

Gluten Free Minneapolis/Twin Cities

Oct
28

Big thanks go out to my good friend and fellow gluten free traveller, Meagan Manning, for writing this post. For anyone contemplating a gluten free trip to the Twin Cities, do not fear. Meagan has provided us with lots of useful tips on where to find safe and delicious gluten free delights! I can’t wait to return to one of my favourite cities in the mid-west to try some of these celiac friendly locations…

Minneapolis may be best known for its cold winters and domed sports arena, but the immense plethora of tasty, locally owned restaurant offerings are not to be ignored. When I discovered my gluten intolerance just over a year ago, I was convinced many of my favorite spots would be off limits—after having worked in the restaurant industry for six years, I am acutely aware of cross-contamination dangers present in industrial kitchens and the potential distractedness of a busy server. Luckily, I was sorely mistaken. A large percentage of the places in my neighborhood already catered to those of us who cannot consume even the smallest amount of gluten. I am continually impressed at the number of restaurants in the Twin Cities with gluten free menus and staff members familiar with the severity of a reaction to gluten. I’ve come up with a list of a few of my favorite places and some tips for those passing through the Twin Cities. While the best months to visit are definitely during summer and early fall, Minneapolis is a great place to be gluten free any time of the year!

Gluten Free Renaissance Hotel, Denver

My delicious salad

Free of gluten

Last week on our way home from Des Moines, our one hour layover in Denver turned into a 12 hour layover when our flight was cancelled out of the blue. With nothing we could do but wait until the early morning flight, due to a strange lack of alternative flights heading in our direction, we took our complimentary vouchers for $15 of food and a room at the Renaissance Hotel. We could spend the vouchers at either the airport or the hotel. We decided to give finding a gluten free option at the hotel a shot. I wasn’t too hopeful but I was happily surprised by what I found. Eagle Pizzeria Gluten Free

Sep
20

Last weekend I had amazing gluten free pizza in San Francisco and it was completely by chance. This doesn’t happen often so I was pretty excited. John and I were exploring the area around Lake Merced and on heading back towards town we came across Eagle Pizzeria on Taraval Street (between 27th & 28th Ave). Pizza places,  more often than not, are the enemy but I spotted a sign in their window saying ‘We are proud to offer gluten free pizza.’ Yay! I thought and went in to inquire further.

Ask The Right Questions Eating Out Gluten Free

Aug

Breakfast in NYC

Dinner in Iowa

When you’re celiac there’s no doubt about it, eating out isn’t simple. Ensuring you get a safe gluten free meal free of cross contamination when you’re eating out means asking the right questions…but what are the right questions? You need to be sure your gluten free bread wasn’t toasted alongside whole wheat bread and that the toppings on your gluten free pizza weren’t ladled on using cross contaminated utensils. You can’t eat french fries which were cooked in the same fryer as breaded fish and you can’t eat a gluten free sandwich unless it was prepared in a separate contamination free area. I know all of these things and you know all of these things but do the kitchen staff at your favourite restaurant? I hope so! (more…)

Subway Gluten Free

Aug

Back at the beginning of the year I heard that Subway were starting to test gluten free rolls and brownies for gluten free customers and now it sounds like they are expanding  as these items make their way onto menus. Subway sandwiches are the one fast food that I ate in my pre-celiac days so the thought of being able to eat here again is exciting. On the other hand, taking into consideration that Subway is a sandwich bar..gluten..gluten…gluten, it’s probably one of the last places any celiac would consider going for a safe meal, right? My first thought was perhaps they are catering for gluten sensitive folks rather than celiacs. I’m very happy and appreciative that Subway want to provide options for gluten free customers and I certainly wouldn’t want to discourage them from doing so but at the same time we need to ensure that that what they’re taking enough (and the correct) precautions to keep us safe..or what’s the point? One thing is for sure, they certainly have a difficult job ahead of them assuring customers that their gluten free products are safe when prepared in an environment filled with wheat, barley, oats and rye. What precautions could Subway sandwich artists take to convince us? (more…)

Ike's Place

John's 'Spiffy Tiffy'

On Sunday John and I whilst on one of our uber-long walks around the city decided to head in the direction of Ike’s. Our stomachs were telling us that it was getting close to lunch time, John had heard great things about this place and I had noticed on their website that they did gluten free sandwiches so we were off to The Mission dreaming of a tasty and satisfying lunch.
