Who are you and where are you?
Hi! I’m Adina from the blog, Gluten Free Travelette and my home base is Seattle, Washington!

Tell me about your relationship with gluten..
Gluten and I are not friends. In fact, we really don’t get along. I’m gluten intolerant and sensitive to even slight bits of cross contamination. Although, I’m lucky that I can still eat out at restaurants that have good safe food preperation procedures.

Why should gluten free travellers visit your town?
Seattle is a wonderful place to be gluten free. We’ve got a number of delicious gluten free bakeries, shops that specialize in gluten free products, and oodles of restaurants to choose from. I tend to seek out good gluten free sandwiches when I travel and Seattle has lots of places where you can find one.

Tell me something fun about your town..
On a clear day, on top of one of the many hills in the city you can see mountains and water in almost any direction. The Olympic and Cascade Ranges, Mount Rainer, Puget Sound, Lake Union and Washington, these are all one of the main reasons I love living in Seattle.

Where is your favourite place to eat out in your town and why?
My favorite place to eat in Seattle is the first gluten free friendly restaurant I ever ate at here; Cafe Flora. It’s a vegetarian reastaurant that has wonderful low key yet quirky atmosphere and plently of gluten free options on their seasonal menu. Everytime I go I come away full of delicious food and feeling good about what I ate.

My favorite gluten free bakery in Seattle can currently be found at 518 5th Avenue, Capitol Hill. NUflours bakes up some of the best gluten free cookies, cakes, and treats that I’ve ever had. You can also find their treats at a few coffee shops throughout the city.

My favorite place to take friends and family when they visit is for southwestern mexican food at Cactus. Their handmade thick corn tortillas are some of the best I’ve ever had and they have gluten free menu with plenty of vegetarian and a few vegan options as well. All the locations are in fun Seattle neighborhoods like West Seattle, Lake Union, and Madison Park.

My favorite place to get a sandwich is Chaco Canyon Cafe in the University District. This organic vegetarian cafe has the most delicious house made gluten free bread and smoothies that are to die for. Seriously, get the Chocolate Cherry one – amazing.

{NOW CLOSED 🙁 }And since this is Seattle, my favorite gluten free fish and chips can be found at 50 North in the University District. Their menu identifies safe dishes for a number of different dietary needs and they have lots inventive dishes.

    My absolute must stop in Seattle is Portage Bay Cafe. Bestest glutenfree breakfast EVER!

  • Seattle is amazing when it comes to gluten free dining. Although most of my dining had to take place in chain restaurants in the suburbs, when I got to the city I ate like a queen.

    I loved Cafe Flora’s food. It was beautiful and delicious.

    Chaco Canyon was amazing for what I would consider to be fast casual dining. The portions were outstanding! I wish they had locations here! They’d go over so well.

    When I went a few years back I dined at The Matador. The food was good, and they even had a real menu for gluten free diners (not just a print out) though they had shared fryers.

    The same trip that I went to The Matador I also went to Señor Moose. The vegetarian Mole Coloradito was the best mole I’ve had in my entire life.

    I’ve gotta give it up for the Red Robin chain, and Five Guys, though too. They were really knowledgeable and on their game.

    I might end up there again at the end of the summer, and I’m looking forward to some more good food that I know is safe.

    I am writing to inform you that my cafe, Caffe Torino, in the South Lake Union district of Seattle (two blocks north of REI) has gluten free options. All of our paninis can be made with Udi’s rice flour gluten-free bread, which is also nut and dairy free. We have a few of our own gluten-free sweets: Hazelnut Blondie, Apricot Sabbia Cake and Polenta Cookie Ice Cream Sandwiches, as well as Seattle’s own D:floured chocolate chip cookies and brownies. Finally, we always have gluten free options for our soup and salads.

    We welcome your site visitors to come in and enjoy our fabulous options. We’ve have received many great reviews from customers.

  • I know the Portage Bay Cafe comment is pretty old, but I had to reply. I would LOVE Portage Bay Cafe if the food there were gluten free for people with celiac and other gluten intolerances. We went when my daughter had orientation at the University of Washington in August 2015, but left before ordering. They have no cross-contamination control whatsoever. Gluten free pancakes sound delicious, but I can’t risk it.
