Nugo Nutrition Bars Gluten Free

Nugo Nutrition

I recently sampled a few of the snack bars that Nugo Nutrition have to offer. I tried a couple of bars from their NuGo free and NuGo Slim ranges. Both of these lines are Certified Gluten Free. Yay! Some of their other lines are gluten free too but aren’t certified. Personally I’d rather stick with those certified by the Gluten Free Certification Organisation but for anyone interested it sounds as though NuGo are doing their best to ensure their bars are produced safely for celiacs. The following explanation of how they ensure their products are gluten free comes directly from their website:

How does NuGo ensure our products are Gluten-Free?

The current proposed FDA standard for labeling a product gluten-free is testing to ensure it contains less than 20ppm of gluten. At NuGo, all bars that say gluten-free on the label have been batch tested to below 10ppm, a stronger standard than the FDA recommends. Some equipment used in the production of some of our gluten-free bars is shared with gluten, therefore we must list on our packages that the bar is made on shared equipment with wheat. We manage allergens strictly during manufacturing, and all shared equipment is heat treated and cleaned before use with our gluten-free products in order for us to maintain the highest standard to ensure the products test below 10ppm. Additionally, NuGO Slim and NuGO FREE are certified gluten-free by the Gluten-Free Certification Organization, and NuGo 10 is made in a dedicated gluten-free facility.

The Bars

The Roasted peanut bar has a good texture and bite to it and contains 15g of protein. Most of the protein bars I’ve tried are squishy but this one has some crunch to it. If you like dark chocolate and peanuts then you’ll like this. It tastes just like dark chocolate covered peanuts..in bar form.

The Dark Chocolate Crunch bar tastes less like a protein bar and more like a chocolatey treat. I see this as a good thing. It tastes just like a chocolate crispy cake except covered in dark chocolate rather than milk chocolate. There are a lot more ingredients to be found in this than in my favourite childhood treat of rice krispies and chocolate but I guess this is where the 9g of protein come from.

The Dark Chocolate Trail Mix bar is probably my favourite of the bars I tried. The mixture of sweet nutty granola mix goes well with the dark chocolate making it sweet and tasty.

If you are a lover of dark chocolate and you are looking for a safe gluten free treat to take with you on your gluten free travels then these are another option to consider. Be aware though, whilst an air conditioned car may be the perfect location to nibble these chocolatey treats if you’re headed for a long walk on a sunny afternoon they are likely to melt. 😉
