Pepsi Gluten Free

Mountain Dew

With all the time and effort we give to ensuring what we eat is gluten free and safe for us, we need to make sure that what we are drinking is also safe. I drink mostly water, tea or fruit juice and try not to drink too much fizzy juice, soda, pop, whatever you like to call it, but sometimes I can’t resist a can of Mountain Dew. Back when I was first diagnosed as celiac I contacted Pepsi to ensure that original and diet dew were gluten free but today I decided it would be a good idea to email them for further and more up to date information. They emailed me back within 2 hours. (more…)

Gluten Free Cadbury’s UK

Feb

Cadbury’s chocolate is everywhere in the UK. It comes in egg form at Easter, selection boxes at Christmas and simply as it is all year round. Dairymilk…Twirl…Fudge…Crunchie…Curly Wurly..Chomp…Flake… and the list could go on and on. In my opinion Cadbury’s chocolate is one of the best out there. I don’t think there are many chocolate bars here in the States which measure up to a nice cold Twirl straight from the fridge.

Triumph Dining Gluten Free Grocery Guide

Gluten Free Grocery Guide

Last week Triumph Dining sent me a copy of their Gluten Free Grocery Guide.

Since moving to the US from the UK I’ve often wondered why there was no equivalent to the Coeliac UK Food and Drink Directory here in the States. It’s something I use constantly back home. The small book is the perfect size to keep with you at all times and it’s filled with information on products which are safe for celiacs. As the information is relevant for the whole country, it’s great for  gluten free trips to Scotland, England and Wales.

I was pretty excited to check out Triumph Dining’s Grocery Guide. This is something that celiacs living in or travelling to the United States are very much in need of. In a country where there is currently no gluten free labelling legislation, it is difficult for celiacs to know which products are safe for them to eat. Some companies label products as ‘gluten free’ but what does this mean? Without a country wide legal definition of the term ‘gluten free’, gluten free consumers have no idea what they are getting. Products labelled as ‘glutenfree’ in Europe for example must contain less than 20ppm of gluten. In the US this is not the case. This is why this book is great. It helps gluten free consumers to make more informed choices regarding the products they are buying in stores throughout the US. (more…)

Gluten Free Bakery On Main

Gluten free instant oatmeal

I haven’t been eating oats much in the last two years. Whilst certified gluten free oats are meant to be safe for celiacs, I decided to keep oats from my diet until I was feeling 100% better. That way it would be obvious if I am one of the celiacs who aren’t able to tolerate oats. I then pretty much forgot oats existed until very recently. Even in pre-celiac days the only oats I would eat were Scots Porridge Oats for breakfast or those found in Haggis..clearly I’m Scottish!

More recently a few of the protein bars I’ve eaten contain small amounts of gluten free certified oats but I haven’t yet eaten a whole bowl of them. Last month when I was home in the UK for the holidays I ate some gluten free oat cakes and gluten free haggis! I felt great after these products so now it’s time to try a whole bowl of gluten free oats. I received some tasty sounding flavoured oats from Bakery On Main. Let’s see how it goes… (more…)

Gluten Free Bounce Balls

Gluten Free Protein Ball

A few weeks ago when I was home visiting Scotland I received some samples of Bounce Balls to try. I’ve tried so many energy and protein snacks in bar form so I was excited to try a ball shaped snack for a change! Bounce Balls do five different kinds of balls and each one has it’s own special ingredients. I tried the Peanut Protein ball, Almond Protein ball and Spirulina Ginseng ball. The peanut and almond balls are high in protein (and around 220 calories) so these are ones I would eat before or after a long run to give me some tasty energy. The nutty flavours are strong in these snacks which I really enjoyed.  The ginseng ball is very different. For some reason I thought it would be my least flavourite of the three but I really enjoyed it. It has an interesting taste and feels much lighter than the other two I tried. It’s marketed as an defense boost as the ingredients it contains are rich in antioxidants and vitamins. I’d eat all three again but particularly the ginseng one.

The other two balls they do are Cashew and Pecan and Fudge Walnut. I haven’t had the chance to try these yet but they sound pretty awesome.

Gluten Free Garlic Ice Cream Gilroy

Garlic Ice Cream

En route from San Francisco to Bakerfield earlier this week we stopped at a little town called Gilroy. Gilroy, nicknamed ‘Garlic Capital of the World’  houses a factory which processes more garlic than any other factory in the world.  They hold their annual Garlic Festival every year in July and it’s one of the biggest food festivals in the US. As you drive past the town you can smell Garlic for miles so you definitely can’t miss it…it’s a pretty unique experience! Gluten Free Sweets UK

Drumsticks!

Barratt's shrimps are gluten free!

So I don’t know about you but personally I’m a huge fan of sweets (or candy if any Americans are reading this!). Since I was kid I could easily have gone without crisps and chocolate if it meant I could delve into a big bag of pic n mix. I think we should all take a moment of silence here to remember Woolworths…. (more…)

Think Thin Gluten Free

Think Thin Bars

I received a box of Think Thin bars last week. All of their bars are gluten free and contain varying amounts of protein. Personally I enjoyed their crunch bars the most but their whole selection is pretty yummy, especially if you’re looking for a good tasting bar which also has lots of protein. Their protein bars come in at around 230-240 calories per bar and the crunch at around 190 calories. (more…)
