Gluten Free Cereal

My favourite thing to eat is cereal. Morning, afternoon, evening or night, when I’m at home and when I travel, I’m always ready for a nibble of my favourite flakes! When I was first diagnosed as celiac the hardest thing for me was knowing I could no longer eat all of my favourite cereals. Finding safe cereals that still taste good can be difficult and often expensive, especially when travelling! This category is for the tasty gluten free breakfast cereals I have come across in my travels.

Gluten Free Rice Krispies

Since my gluten free life began, not having the wide choice of breakfast cereals like I used to has been the most difficult thing for me. At first I thought being coeliac meant I could never eat cereal again but thankfully I quickly found out this was not the case. I couldn’t have the cereals I was used to and I no longer had the variety to choose from but there were some nice companies out there who made special cereals just for me! Discovering new gluten free cereals has been great whether they are naturally gluten free or specifically made. I was extremely excited to discover that CHEX in the States were made and re-branded as gluten free. (more…)

Envirokids Gluten Free

Nature’s Path produce some delicious gluten free cereals and the Envirokidz products are my favourite! A large variety of their cereal and cereal bars are available in the US and a few of the cereals can be found in specialist stores in the UK.

Cereals: Gorilla Munch (crunchy little balls of corn), Koala Crisp (chocolate rice puffs), Leapin Lemurs  (a mixture of peanut butter and chocolate balls), Amazon Frosted Flakes (crispy corn flakes) and Panda Puffs (peanut butter flavoured corn puffs).

Rice Bars: Lemur Peanut Choco Drizzle, Fruity Burst, Cheetah Berry, Koala Chocolate and Peanut Butter

Chex are Gluten Free!!!

As you know I’m all about the cereal and as I’m spending the entire summer in the States, finding great tasting gluten free cereal was at the top of my list! I found on previous visits that there are a number of different gluten free cereals available but as these are produced by specialist companies they are also significantly more expensive than ‘normal’ cereals. I wanted to find something similar to the Whole Earth cereals that I eat in the UK, cereals that are naturally gluten free and therefore tend not to be as expensive as specifically gluten free brands.

I was so happy when I discovered that Chex are gluten free! There is finally something in the regular cereal aisle of the everyday supermarket that coeliacs can get excited about.  The corn, rice, cinammon, chocolate and honey nut varieties are all gluten free! This is very good news.

‘Normal’ Breakfast Cereal In The UK

These cereals are found in the normal cereal section of UK supermarkets and although include ‘Barley Malt Extract’ in their ingredients, they contain a low enough level of gluten that they keep within the Codex standard. Barley is still listed in the ingredients but they are suitable for people following a gluten free diet. This information comes from Coeliac UK and it is their opinion that if you travel to the UK and require your cereal to be gluten free then you can eat these varieties -

ASDA: Choco Snaps, Cornflakes, Frosted Flakes, Honey Nut Corn Flakes and Rice Snaps.

SAINSBURYS: Choco Snaps, Cornflakes, Frosted Flakes, Honey Nut Corn Flakes and Rice Pops.

SOMERFIELD: Choco Rice, Cornflakes, Crisp Rice, Frosted Flakes and Honeynut Cornflakes

TESCO: Choco Snaps, Cornflakes, Honey Nut Corn Flakes

Tesco Rice Pops also claim to be safe but their rice cereal is called Rice Snaps so I have to look into this further.

I have recently discovered this information and have since gone back to eating a few of these ‘normal’ cereals much to the joy of my tastebuds and my wallet. Things are going well so far and I haven’t felt glutenated but I will keep you updated in case things change. It feels a little disconcerting to be eating something I know contains ingredients I didn’t think I could ever have again even if it is my favourite food ever! If you have any experience positive or negative with eating these cereals then please share your thoughts…..

UPDATE: April 2012. Whilst these cereals continue to include barley malt extract as an ingredient (I’m not sure why they can’t get rid of it!) they are still considered safe for Coeliacs under the new labelling legislation passed at the beginning of 2012. If you’re in the UK and looking for safe products, including cereals, your best bet is to check out the Coeliac UK Food and Drink Directory for the most up-to-date information and listings of safe, gluten free products.
