Gluten Free Hot Spud, SF

May

Last Saturday after a fun trip to Alcatraz and before a drive to Sonoma for wine tasting, the search was on for something that would keep me satisfied through sip after sip of vino. On one of my various searches for gluten free eateries in the Bay Area, I had come across Hot Spud in the Fisherman’s Wharf area of the city. Huge jacket potatoes filled with interesting toppings, most of which were gluten free. I had to try this place and this was the perfect day to check it out!

Wonderfully flavoursome spuds!

No gluten in my kitchen!

Is your kitchen 100% gluten free? Has your family or partner decided to go gluten free with you or do you have your own special safe section within a gluten loving family kitchen? If you live in shared housing do you keep your pots and pans to yourself?

With the threat of cross contamination a serious one, how careful are you when it comes to keeping evil crumbs from sneaking into your food?

Wherever you are in this gluten filled world…does your country’s Coeliac Association have a directory

Coeliac UK Food&Drink Directory

which provides info for coeliacs on safe gluten free products by brand and/or supermarket? The UK does thanks to the fantastic and hard working Coeliac UK. The Food and Drink Directory which Coeliac UK compiles each year can be found both in hard copy or electronically on the Coeliac UK site. Newly diagnosed Coeliacs in the UK can sign up for 6 months free membership (which can be renewed for £10-20 per year) giving them access to this directory searchable by brand or supermarket. It provides an extensive list of products which they have found to be safe for coeliacs.

Gluten Free Stirling

GF soup and sandwich

UPDATE: Bluebell Tearoom had now moved to 1a Pitt Terrace in Stirling. The word is that they now have delicious gluten free pancakes and a separate toaster for gluten free toasted sandwiches!

Today I was invited to the Bluebell Tearoom in Stirling by owner, Lisa, to try some of the gluten free treats they have to offer. I don’t often find myself in Stirling these days so it was nice to have a reason to return to this pretty little town where I spent my four University years…oh the memories!

Gluten Free Reid’s Cafe, Perth, Scotland

My smoked ham and chutney sandwich 😀

Last weekend I drove up to Perth to visit my lovely friend Fiona. I’m lucky to have so many nice friends and family members who are always on the lookout for coeliac friendly places to eat and shop. Fiona is one of these friends and last week when she walked into Reid’s Cafe on the High Street in Perth she noticed a bunch of gluten free signage. She decided to ask the waitress about their options for coeliacs and it turns out they do quite a few!

Are His Kisses Gluten Free?

A gluten free kiss after my marathon!

The following is strong evidence of just how much time I spend focused on my gluten free world…

When Cher sang the Shoop Shoop song she may have been talking about love when she said ‘It’s in his kiss’ but hearing these words leads my wee gluten free noggin (that’s my head) to think about whether kissing could be a source of cross contamination?

Gluten Free Beef Casserole

Apr

I enjoy cooking and experimenting with gluten free dishes and luckily for me so do most of my family and friends. I’m a big fan of simple dishes which can be prepared fairly quickly and without too many different ingredients which is why my gluten free recipes section is mostly filled with these types of easy and quick to prepare dishes. This recipe for Gluten Free Beef Casserole, which my sister-in-law cooked last weekend, is a little different. It involves a few more ingredients than I would normally use and takes a couple of hours to cook. It’s still simple to cook though and it’s so delicious and flavoursome that I couldn’t leave it out…

Gluten Free Toasted Coconut Chicken

Apr

Yesterday I was happy to receive this delicious sounding recipe from Jason, whose 4 year old son was diagnosed as celiac in October 2009. It’s lovely to hear from fellow gluten free families about the gluten free recipes they have concocted. This recipe for gluten free toasted coconut chicken sounds scrumdiddlyumptious to me and I can’t wait to give it a try! Anything which involves coconut and gluten free corn flakes is a recipe that gets me excited!  I’ll be sure to add some photos to the post once I’ve given it a try…

Jail For Selling Fake Gluten Free Bread

Whether or not to buy products advertised as ‘gluten free’ but that you can’t

Sadly not everything is labelled as gluten free

be 100% sure about is always a difficult one. If you’re buying branded products in a supermarket then you’ve got a label to check for hidden gluten. When you’re walking around your local farmers market picking up local produce from what you hope are friendly and honest sellers you don’t have the same opportunity…
